About Darwin

Darwin International Airport

Darwin International Airport is Australia’s gateway to Asia. Welcoming more than 2.5 million passengers each year, the airport connects Territorians to major cities in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

In March 2015, the airport’s Terminal Expansion Project was completed. The airport has already invested a further $73 million, expanding its capacity by 50 per cent to cater for the future growth of Darwin and the Northern Territory. The upgrade doubled the airport’s peak hour capacity and offers visitors a better passenger experience with new retail, lounges, facilities and duty free shopping.

Newcomers and tourists are drawn by the city’s relaxed outdoor lifestyle, fusion cuisine and expansive national parks of the Top End. The Northern Territory is home to some of the World’s greatest tourist destinations and surrounded by a harbour three times that of Sydney.

Darwin’s proximity to Asia represents great potential to develop stronger links with our neighbours. With the airport upgrade and development in the city within industry, commerce and tourism, Darwin is poised to become a future stopover for international transfers, servicing and refuelling – and a significant business and leisure destination in its own right.

Darwin International Airport had:

  • 6,500 passengers arrive or depart each day

  • Over 2,000 person workforce

  • Significant increase in visitor numbers during peak season

  • Novotel Airport Hotel and Mercure Darwin Airport Resort are just 250 metres from the airport and 800 metres from Airport Central

Darwin and the Top End

The Northern Territory’s capital is a vibrant, tropical, contemporary city home to a multicultural population of 140,000 people, and attracts tens of thousands more each year to live and work. It is the economic heart of Australia’s Top End and has one of the best performing economies in Australia, predicted to grow by an average of 3.3 per cent per annum over the next five years. Business confidence is high and there are substantial employment opportunities – including tourism, with the NT Tourism Vision 2020 targeting a $2.2 billion visitor economy.

Compared to the Australian average, Darwin has:

  • A younger age profile

  • Larger households

  • Lower unemployment

  • Higher income per capita and household

  • Higher retail spend per capita

  • Faster population growth – increasing at an average rate of 4.4 per cent since 1961
